How Is It Legal for Undercover Cops to Sell Drugs?

Question by Brian: How is it legal for undercover cops to sell drugs?
So COPS is on right now and I was just watching them do an undercover drug bust. An undercover cop was selling cocaine rocks to people who came up to him and they’d then arrest the buyer.. but just out of curiosity, how is it legal for a cop to possess and sell cocaine? Isn’t that a crime in itself? I’m not against cops or anything, I am just curious what the rules are for that and interested. Is there some sort of special immunity given?

Thanks.

Sometimes theres a decoy that will go to the innercity and offer drugs…..if the person takes the cop up on the offer…..then various other squad cars move in for an arrest.

Perhaps they don’t actually have the drugs on them. If they do I find that highly unethical.

  • Fee Simple:

Prosecutors will usually grant undercover police immunity from drug charges for work they’re doing undercover. Undercover police are generally permitted to do all sorts of illegal things, like buy and sell contraband and solicit prostitution. They are also allowed to lie about being a cop, contrary to popular myth.

    Value of intentions.
A criminal is trying to spread drugs around and make profit.
A Police officer is trying to prevent it from happening.

  • Jesse:

ITS ILLEGAL… They can NOT APPROACH anyone to commit an illegal act ! EXAMPLE: a female officer stands on a corner looking like prostitute is completely legal, but she can NOT go solicite herself to people.. It means as long as they are not DIRECTLY APPROACHING anyone its legal.

However its hard to ever prosecute law enforcement that violet the law.
