I suspect someone is doing cocaine or something .Very high and very low.Also withdrawing from close friends and being uncharacteristically mean.Are these symptoms of drug use?

Yes, these are characteristics of a drug user. Also be on the look out for dishonesty and outrageous behavior that goes against their morality. Watch out for them in your house. They are not against stealing to pay for their habits.

with cocaine what I found was that a day or sometimes even two after using I felt really edgy, and would snap at someone for nothing. so being mean, yeah could be..
if you can get hold of the person actually while you think they may be using would be the best.
while using cocaine someone may talk more than usually, and if its at a party you may notice them using the bathroom more than usual, to go take that quick line. also sniffing is a big sign, but one can concentrate hard enough not to.
depending on how you well you know the person, if its cocaine, they will be spending most of their cash on it, so if you can keep track of their finances, there’s a way to identify it.
last one is to get hold of the persons wallet, if they have cards, that’s usually what gets used to cut the lines, check them out.
